Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,840m) & Trek to Phakding (2,610m)
Your Gokyo Lake Trek adventure begins with a thrilling 35-minute mountain flight from Kathmandu to Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla, one of the world’s most dramatic runways. After meeting your Marvel Treks guide and porter, you begin your first gentle downhill walk along the Dudh Koshi River valley, passing through traditional Sherpa settlements and lush pine forests before arriving at the cozy village of Phakding for your first night in the mountains.
Day 2: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Today’s trail follows the roaring Dudh Koshi River, crossing several thrilling suspension bridges, including the famous Hillary Bridge, draped with colorful prayer flags. Entering Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo, the trail climbs steeply through dense rhododendron and juniper forests before rewarding you with your first stunning glimpse of Everest, Lhotse, and Thamserku. You arrive at Namche Bazaar, the vibrant “Gateway to Everest” and the bustling capital of the Sherpa people, where the real Himalayan atmosphere begins.
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
A vital rest day that your body will thank you for. To aid acclimatization, you take a short hike up to the iconic Everest View Hotel (3,880 m) for sweeping panoramas of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and the top of the world, Mount Everest. Back in Namche, you can explore the colorful Saturday market, the Sherpa Culture Museum, and the lively teahouses and bakeries that make this mountain town unlike any other on Earth.
Day 4: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Dole (4,200m)
Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail at Kyangjuma, the path now veers northwest onto the quieter, less-trodden route toward Gokyo, one of the great rewards of this trek. The trail climbs through yak pastures, past the monastery-draped village of Phortse Thanga, and into open alpine meadows with jaw-dropping views of Thamserku, Kantega, and Ama Dablam. You spend the night in the peaceful herder’s settlement of Dole, where the air is noticeably thinner and the silence is absolute.
Day 5: Trek from Dole to Machhermo (4,470m)
A shorter but increasingly high-altitude day as the landscape transforms into dramatic open terrain above the treeline. The trail passes through the small settlements of Lhafarma and Luza, with sweeping views of the Gokyo Valley growing wider with every step. Machhermo is a key acclimatization village on the route and serves as an important checkpoint; it’s also famous locally as the site of a legendary yeti encounter. Rest well here; the Gokyo Lakes are tantalizingly close.
Day 6: Trek from Machhermo to Gokyo Village (4,790m)
One of the most anticipated days of the entire trek. The trail climbs steadily past moraines and glacial streams before unveiling the first of the sacred Gokyo Lakes, Longpongo (First Lake), and Taboche Tsho (Second Lake), their turquoise waters shimmering against the white Himalayan giants above. Reaching Gokyo village on the shores of the magnificent Dudh Pokhari (Third Lake, also called Gokyo Cho), the scene is simply breathtaking. The Ngozumpa Glacier, Nepal’s largest, stretches out dramatically to the west.
Day 7: Gokyo Ri (5,357m) Summit & Explore the Upper Lakes
The highlight of the entire Gokyo Lake Trek. You rise before dawn to begin the climb up Gokyo Ri, reaching the summit at 5,357m as the first golden light touches the Himalayas. The 360° panoramic view from the top is extraordinary, with four eight-thousanders visible at once: Everest (8,849 m), Cho Oyu (8,188 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), and Makalu (8,485 m). After descending, the afternoon is spent exploring the Fourth and Fifth Lakes, with the Fifth Lake offering one of the finest unobstructed views of Mount Everest found anywhere on the planet.
Day 8: Trek from Gokyo to Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Bidding farewell to the sacred lakes and the Ngozumpa Glacier, you begin the long but rewarding descent back through Machhermo, Dole, and Phortse Thanga toward Namche Bazaar. The lower altitude brings welcome warmth, denser vegetation, and a renewed energy in your legs. The familiar sights and sounds of Namche are a welcome return. This is your final night in the high Himalayas, a perfect moment to reflect on the remarkable journey through Gokyo Valley over a warm meal.
Day 9: Trek Namche to Lukla & Fly Back to Kathmandu
The final trekking day retraces the beautiful riverside trail from Namche, descending through the forest and suspension bridges back to Phakding and onward to Lukla. After a celebratory farewell dinner with your guide and crew, you rest for an early morning flight back to Kathmandu carrying with you memories of turquoise glacial lakes, soaring Himalayan giants, warm Sherpa hospitality, and the deep satisfaction of completing one of Nepal’s most spectacular treks.
Best Time to Visit for the Gokyo Lake Trek
The best seasons for the Gokyo Lake Trek are autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May). Autumn brings crystal-clear skies, fresh post-monsoon greenery, and sharp mountain views making it the most popular and ideal time to trek. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons, warm daytime temperatures, and equally stable skies. During winter (December to February), heavy snowfall can block high-altitude trails near Gokyo, making conditions extremely challenging. The monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall, muddy and slippery trails, and poor mountain visibility not recommended for this trek. For the best photography, clearest lake reflections, and the most comfortable trekking conditions, plan your Gokyo Valley adventure during spring or autumn.
How Difficult Is the Gokyo Lake Trek?
The Gokyo Lake Trek is rated moderate to challenging, primarily due to altitude rather than technical terrain. Trekkers walk 5–7 hours daily, gaining 400–830 meters of elevation on some days, with the highest point being Gokyo Ri at 5,357m. While the trails are well-established and non-technical, the thin air above 4,000m demands strong cardiovascular fitness and careful acclimatization especially at the Namche Bazaar rest day and gradual ascent through Machhermo. Altitude sickness is the primary risk, making a proper itinerary with built-in rest days essential. Beginners with good fitness levels can complete this trek safely with proper preparation; it is strongly recommended to begin a training program at least 6 weeks before departure, focusing on cardiovascular endurance and leg strength. Marvel Treks’ 9-day itinerary is designed to allow gradual altitude gain and reduce the risk of altitude-related illness.
