Ama Yangri Trek Overview

Ama Yangri is one of the shortest treks from Kathmandu yet the most beautiful peak is located in the Helambu region, Sindupalchok. Ama Yangri is one of the holy peaks at an elevation of 3771m from sea level. Helambu region is popular for a lot of trekking destinations, however, Ama Yangri is one of the less explored areas with off-beaten paths.

This peak is also known as Poonhill of Helambu region and Ama Jyomoyangri locally. The word Ama Yangri is a combination of two sacred words “Ama” (Mother) and Yangri (Goddess) “. Basically, Ama Yangri is the deity of the Helambu region that protects people and places from evil.

The trek to Ama Yangri is collectively and highly decorated by Buddhist culture, dense forest, small traditional villages, Rhododendron forest, and the best view of Dorje Lakpa Himal. There is no doubt, this place has a lot of potential to attract national and international tourists.

Ama Yangri is lagging behind tourism and is not much famous among people even though the place is very deserving.

This route takes around 7-8 days with proper rest. It costs around 100$-180$ since it is a short trek. The cost includes food, accommodations, transportation, permits, etc.

Highlights of Ama Yangri Trek

  • Explore the holy Ama Yangri peak
  • See the colorful Rhododendron forest
  • Cultural villages of Helambu region
  • Astonishing view of Ganesh Himal range, Langtang Himalayan range, etc.

Trip Map

Best season to go

The best season to trek Helambu Ama Yangri peak is in spring (March-May) and autumn (September- November). In this season the temperature is very favorable, the views are very clear with crystal blue sky. You can see a green forest, Rhododendrons and beautiful mountain views. This season doesn’t receive much rainfall and the trails are in the best condition. It is still possible to trek in the Monsoon season and winter season but due to heavy rainfall and snowfall, you have to be more careful with the trails since they are muddy and slippery.

Other requirements

Travel insurance- you can always purchase your travel insurance. It usually costs around 150$(15000 NRS) good for 30 days. It is important to mention or cover high altitudes since trekkers sometimes really need to be evacuated from helicopters. Travel Insurance depends on the details you have provided that’s why it’s important to notify them earlier about the altitudes you will be reaching.

Visas/ passports – foreigners other than Indians need to have valid visas and passports prior to visiting Nepal. The passport must hold a minimum of 6 months of visa validity from their date of arrival. They can have the Nepalese visa at Kathmandu airport.
