Aconcagua Expedition Overview
Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the western and southern hemispheres within the Andes mountain range with a height of 6,961m (6.961 km). It lies to the northwest of Mendoza and is one of the seven summits. The name means the ‘white sentinel’ or ‘sentinel of stones’ among the indigenous communities of that region. Aconcagua is a part of the great Aconcagua Provincial Park, which has great landscapes for its visitors. The beautiful and mesmerizing beauty of the park and the mountain itself, attract a lot of climbers and tourists every year. One can also get a chance to enjoy the vast and beautiful glaciers in Aconcagua Expedition.
The simple weather and the geographical features of Aconcagua make it one of the best options for moderate-leveled mountaineering. It can also be used as a practice to climb mountains taller than 8,000m. Different routes are accessible based on the level of difficulties that the climbers want to experience in the Aconcagua Expedition. The northern route is the easiest one which is possible to climb even without axes or ropes. However, for those who want to feel the thrill of mountaineering with more difficulties, there is also the southern route. The southern route refers to the Polacos route and is much more difficult than the northern route. One needs technical climbing skills and experience to travel through this route safely and successfully.

Difficulty to climb
Though climbing Aconcagua requires no technical climbing skills, it is only applicable to the northern route. One can climb through the northern route with the minimum knowledge of using an ice axe and crampons. However, the southern route called the Polacos routes requires great technical climbing skills and previous experiences, else the climb cant be completed successfully. Also, the main challenge that is faced in both routes is the weather condition. One has to face colder and more harsh weather while reaching nearer and nearer to the summit.
As the altitude increases the weather becomes colder and even becomes more and more unpredictable. Often the climbers underestimate this mountain and end up dying. Even though the routes are easier than other mountains, the success rate of climbing this mountain is only about 30%. Often, the climbers can’t reach the summit successfully because they underestimate this mountain and even the weather takes its toll. But with proper preparation and guidance, all the challenges can be overcome.

When is Aconcagua usually climbed?
The best season for an expedition to Aconcagua is from November to late February when the weather is somewhat less harsh and comparatively warm. Also, the weather is stable during these months, so climbers can be prepared and be ready to face the predictable challenges.
How hard is it to climb Aconcagua?
Climbing Aconcagua is easier than climbing other mountains among the seven summits as no technical climbing is required if one takes the northern route. However, those who want to feel the thrill of climbing the mountain with a bit more difficulty, they can take the southern route. The southern route needs to have good technical climbing skills and previous experience. Also, irrespective of the route they choose, every climber has to go through the harsh, cold and unpredictable weather of the mountain which gets worse as one gets nearer and nearer to the top. Often the climbers underestimate this mountain and become victims of altitude sickness and other complications caused by the harsh cold weather.
How long does it take to climb Aconcagua?
Climbing Aconcagua might be an adventurous, thrilling and self-refreshing activity yet it is dangerous too, so making a rush might not be the best thing to do considering your safety.
