Chukkhung to Island Peak Overview

Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6189m), located in Nepal’s eastern region within Sagarmatha National Park, captivates with its island-like form amidst an icy expanse. First named by the British Mount Everest expedition in 1953, it later became known as Imja Tse, yet Island Peak remains popular. Notably, Tenzing Norgay, Charles Evans, Alfred Gregory, Charles Wylie, and seven Sherpas ascended its southwest side in 1953.

The peak’s base camp rests at 5087m (Pareshaya Gyab), with the high camp at 5600m. Experienced climbers navigate glacier-covered trails, steep snow, and ice slopes. The summit rewards with a breathtaking view of Mount Lhotse. This 10-day tour commences in Chukhung and costs approximately $900-$1100, covering flights, insurance, permits, food, and accommodations.

Best season to climb

The best season to climb Is Spring (March-May) and autumn (September- November). This season comes with fewer challenges. It is also possible to climb in the winter season, you just have to be ready for more challenges and extremely cold weather which is below -15 degrees Celsius. This peak climbing cannot be done in Monsoon also known as the summer season since the trails are slippery due to heavy rainfall.

Other requirements

Insurance- travel insurance is kind of a mandatory thing before traveling anywhere. You can always purchase your travel insurance from your travel agencies. It usually costs around 150$(15000 NRS) good for 30 days. You need to give them complete details about the places and altitudes you will be reaching because your insurance depends on details you have given earlier.

Nepal visas/passports – foreigners other than Indians need to have valid visas and passports before visiting Nepal. The passport must hold a minimum of 6 months of visa validity from their date of arrival. They can have the Nepalese visa at Kathmandu Tribhuwan International airport.

Payment and Cancellation

1) To confirm a reservation, a deposit equal to 30% of the total price is required.
2) If the payment is made online, the remaining balance is due 10 days before the Tour, Trekking, Peak Climbing, or Expedition begins. If the payment is made in cash, it can be made after arrival. 3) If the booking is made within 30 days of the expedition beginning, full payment must be made at the time of booking.

Cancellation:
1)A full refund of the deposit will be given if a Tour, Trek, Peak Climbing, or Expedition is canceled more than 60 days before the start date.
2)The deposit will not be refunded if a Tour, Trek, Peak Climbing, or Expedition is canceled within 30 days of its start date.
3)A tour, trek, peak climbing, or expedition will not be refunded if it is canceled prior to or on the start date.
4)All participants should strongly consider purchasing travel insurance to cover any unforeseen cancellations or other occurrences.

Temperature and weather in Island peak
The temperature in the Island peak summit always remains under the freezing point. Even in lower altitudes, it is quite cold. However, in the spring season, the average temperature over 4000m is around 17-25 degrees Celsius in the daytime and the minimum temperature is -15 degrees Celsius especially in the morning and night. In the winter season, the temperature below 4000m is around 12 to -5 degrees Celsius. In higher altitudes over 4000m, the temperature is around 8 to -15 Degrees Celsius. The summit is even colder. During the monsoon /summer season, the temperature below 4000m remains around 2- 18 degrees Celsius and over 4000m remains 10 to -2 degrees Celsius.
Food and accommodation
The route to the island peak from Chukkung have enough teahouses run by local people. They provide a comfortable room with twin sharing beds, blankets, and pillows. But once you reach the base camp, you need to do camping and that is why all the stuff for camping is necessary. Tents, sleeping bags, mats, liners, are highly recommended. Food- food in teahouses is healthy and delicious. You will have options like Dal, Bhat, vegetables and also some western foods. Burgers, chips, soft drinks, beer, pastries, fries, bars, and many more are available there. Again once you reach the base camp and start the camping, you need to prepare your own food. Or if you are traveling through any travel agency they will hire a cook for you and make some easy foods.
Transportation
Bus- there is no bus available from Kathmandu to reach Lukla. Lukla is the starting point of this trek and the only airway is the option to reach there. Airplane- your starting point of the trek is Lukla. Flights are easily available from Kathmandu to Lukla which takes 30 minutes and costs you around 4000 NRS. Once you reach Lukla, you will head towards Namche Bazar and start your trek from Phakding.
Communication and electronics
Electricity and communication service are not much of a problem in the Island peak trek. Especially in lower altitudes, all the teahouses have electricity for you to charge your phones and other electronics. Mobile Coverage is available in some place and most of them have satellite phones. Internet facility is also available in teahouses. Even though not so reliable it will definitely help you to connect with your friends and families. However, during your camping days or once you reach base camp, these facilities are not available. Extra batteries and power banks are highly recommended.
Guides and porters
Being one of the mountain areas, trekking all by yourself is quite difficult. Hiring a guide could help you a lot. They have proper knowledge of directions, accommodations, camping sites, and many more. the Guide usually charges you around 30-35$ per day. Porters are a really important part of this trek. If you are planning on a camping trek you need them to carry all your gear and equipment. They charge you around 20-25$ per day.
Safety and fitness
Island peak trek is certainly among the difficult ones. Peak climbing experiences are mandatory in this trek. You have to walk for 6-7 hours per day. It is very important to have a high level of fitness so that you can enjoy your journey without any difficulties. All the mountaineering and climbing skills like using crampons, ice axe, ropes, harnesses, etc are highly needed. The way to the summit is very difficult and the summit ridge is quite airy with steep drops off to the sides. Having a high level of concentration and patience is important. You need to practice light exercise, running, jogging, and build your muscle strength before your journey starts. The maximum height in this trek is 6189m, which increases the risk of altitude sickness. You have to stay hydrated throughout your journey, eat nutritional food, and check your oxygen level from time to time and walk slowly so that you can adjust with increasing heights. If you ever feel any symptoms of altitude sickness like nausea, increased heart rates, breathing difficulties, etc. you need to talk to your guide, your friends, or anyone near you. Lastly, this peak is not recommended to non-experienced or new learners.
Permits and fees
Sagarmatha National Park Permit- this permit costs 3000NRS (30$) to every trekker beside SAARC countries. It costs only 1500NRS (15$) to SAARC countries. Pasang Lhamu VDC permit- this permit costs 2000 NRS (20$) to every trekker. Island peak climbing permit- the cost for this permit depends on the seasons.
